If you guys haven’t seen the viral Tik Tok of Kourtney Kardashian proclaiming that black furniture is “disgusting” go ahead and watch that before you read the rest of this post.
OR you can watch the YouTube video below.
Basically she says to her sister Khloe…
“Who let you choose black covers for your furniture? Disgusting. Usually people get a color that’s like, neutral to your floor. Who chooses black?”
Now I’m not exactly sure what Kourtney meant by “normally people choose a colour that’s like, neutral to your floor”. I’m assuming she meant normally people go with neutral colours for both their sofa and floor (although black is a neutral colour). It’s also possible she meant normally people choose a colour that’s contrasting to their floor.
Regardless of what Kourtney meant it seems as though she’s properly against the idea of a black sofa.

So is black a disgusting colour to use?
In my opinion it depends. I’m a big believer that nothing’s off limits as long as you use it appropriately. That’s the fun of interior design for me. As soon as we start saying we can’t use this colour sofa or this style of chair then I’m like… but yes we can. I like being able to take something that you would never think would work and make it work!!
Interior designers are great problem solvers. So for me, there are no rules for what colours, fabrics and styles you can and cannot use!
That being said, black can be a tricky colour to work with. It has the tendacy to soak up visible light and can make a room look dark and dingy if used too excessively. Does that mean black is off limits though? I don’t personally thinks so!
Learning about the psychology of colour is another important aspect when picking colours in general. It’s very possible that the colour black provokes negative emotions for Kourtney. While also having the ability to spark positive emotions for someone like Khloe.
Should you use a dark sofa on dark floors?
I took a look at some pictures of Khloe’s house and she seems to have some pretty dark floors. She also has white walls and large windows so there’s a nice balance going on when it comes to light.
I will say a dark sofa on dark floors may not necessarily make the sofa pop. But maybe that’s not what you’re going for. Something that could help here is to add a large area rug in a lighter shade in order to break it up and create a sense of balance.
I don’t know where in Khloe’s house Kourtney was talking about so it’s hard to get a real sense of whether or not it works.
However, I did see a photo of black furniture in Khloe’s outdoor area and it absolutely worked with her stone tile and Moroccan style fireplace.
It’s my opinion that this argument all comes down to preference. From the pictures on Architectural Digest, their interior design styles seem quite different from one another. Kourtney’s house has a very neutral colour palette in the sense that there’s a lot of beige’s and browns. Khloe on the other hand has a lot of contrasting colours between white and black with Morrocan style themes. It’s no surprise they would feel differently when simply looking at how unalike their houses are.
When it comes to the argument of using black furniture, I say there is nothing wrong with it if that’s what you like!
